Convoy Escort


Modified for Convoy Duty, Aug 1942, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. This remained her wartime configuration as submarine hunter and convoy escort until conversion to high-speed target vessel, July 1945.

My father, Robert Ernest Cato, Jr. was a Yeoman on the destroyer USS Whipple near the end of WW2. He made a home movie of men on board while the ship was under way after Germany surrendered. I recorded him describing the film, converted it to video, and put it on Youtube.com. He is now dead. Anyone can view the view at
